Charitable Contributions

The Cox Celebrity Championship is about more than just big names and great golf; it’s about giving back to the San Diego community and reaching out to San Diego children in need. Since its inception in 1999, the Celebrity Classic has raised over $1 million for local San Diego charities. The noteworthy donations of the Celebrity Classic would not be possible without the generous contributions of the participating celebrities, businesses, and attendees who support the tournaments worthy causes each year.

Brooke Humphries Fund at Rady Children’s Hospital

During the first 11 years of the tournament, the “Celebrity Classic hosted by Stan Humphries”, charitable donations benefited the Brooke Humphries Fund at Rady Children’s Hospital. The Brooke Humphries Fund was created and named in honor of former San Diego Chargers quarterback and Celebrity Classic host Stan Humphries and his daughter, Brooke. In 1998, Stan Humphries oldest daughter Brooke, who was eight-years-old at the time, underwent life-threatening heart surgery to correct a birth defect in her heart. She is now a multi-sport star and college student in Louisiana.

Alex Spanos and the San Diego Chargers generously donated $100,000 to aid in the establishment of the Brooke Humphries Fund at Rady Children’s Hospital. The Brooke Humphries Fund has been able to sponsor several programs at Rady Children’s Hospital through the generous donations of the Celebrity Classic hosted by Stan Humphries and the Spanos Family.
  • First, the “Brooke Humphries Field of Champions,” a football-themed waiting area in the Children’s Hospital orthopedic department. The area sees more than 33,000 patients annually, presenting young patients with an enjoyable and entertaining sports atmosphere, taking their minds off of the anxiety of being hospitalized.
  • Another crucial contribution from the Brooke Humphries Fund was the purchase of a van for the Rady Children’s Hospital HomeCare program, the only home health agency in San Diego County dedicated exclusively to caring for children and young adults. This important program operates seven days a week, 24 hours a day filling a much-needed gap in pediatric health care in San Diego and Imperial Counties.
  • Additional monies raised through the Celebrity Classic will support various programs and specialized technology, ensuring that Rady Children’s Hospital will provide San Diego children with the medical care they deserve.

Brees Dream Foundation

Now as the Cox Celebrity Championship hosted by Drew Brees the tournament looks forward to continuing its dedication to give back to the San Diego community. This years charitable contributions will benefit the Brees Dream Foundation.
